The premise of The Glad Game is simple. If you look for the good in a situation, no matter how unpleasant, you will find it. Easy as that. I’m really good at this game, and I am really GLAD about that. (Pun intended.)
This philosophy comes from the book and subsequent movie, Pollyanna. (Surely, you have seen it. If not, click that link and buy it now!) Pollyanna is a young orphan who is forced to go live with her mean Aunt in a small town in Vermont. While many people in her situation would likely adopt a “poor me” negative attitude, Pollyanna does just the opposite. She plays The Glad Game instead – finding good in her less than ideal circumstances. By the end of the movie, not only has she transformed the heart of her mean Aunt but the whole town as well. My optimistic heart just eats it up.
Due to my mom’s own love of Pollyanna, my siblings and I were encouraged from a young age to look for the good in situations. When we would encounter difficult circumstances, my mom taught us to pause and take a minute to find the silver lining. Although it seems a bit corny, I’m extremely grateful that I learned this at a young age. It has served me well as I’ve gotten older.
I love that I am optimistic.
I love that I am capable of picking myself up, dusting myself off, and moving on when bad things happen to me.
I love that I can not only move on from a bad situation but also feel confident that I have learned from the experience.
I spend a lot of my energy figuring out how to make myself better, and I genuinely believe that personal growth is important. Since my self-esteem will probably suffer if I only focus on how I can be better, I also want to celebrate what I love about myself. Therefore, I present What I Love Wednesdays! My plan is to make this a weekly feature, and every Wednesday, I will highlight something that I love about myself. I encourage you to join along, too.
So, tell me. What is one quality that you LOVE about yourself?
